Globsters may be misinterpreted as sea monsters, because they look very different than known species of marine life. However, many researchers found the samples to be sharks or whales. In 2004, Pierce examined all available globster samples using electron microscopes and DNA analysis. The conclusion was that the samples were from different species of giant whales. Although the globsters that were sampled looked alien, they were in fact decaying whale carcasses. A point about DNA analysis is also mentioned: “The results of a genetic test are only as good as the sample it is taken from.” It is important not to interpret “unidentified” and “unknown” results as evidence of a new species, it merely means that the sample could not be identified, which probably means the sample was just bad. DNA analysis is very important in these mistaken identity cases of whales as sea monsters. DNA analysis has proven that although there may be real sea monsters, no evidence of them has been found yet.
