Yeti

For this weeks assignment we read about the Yeti. After talking about Sasquatch in class I believe that the Yeti is very similar. From the reading we learned speculated physical characteristics of the Yeti. Matthiessen says that the Yeti has reddish, brown hair with a pointed head along with a big foot and the size varies. As we all know there has been no real evidence that these creatures exist so there is no way of knowing the behavioral patterns. In 1992 in the northern Himalayas Matthiessen and other found a foot print, the locals knew it was from a Yeti. Along with the footprint twisted hairs were found near a river. They took hair samples and performed tests. I would think the Yetis would be closely related to primates because of what we believe them to look like and how they walk. Especially because they have hair and facial structures close to ours. Form these test results scientists found that mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA gene. Instead of being closely related to us it was closely related to a specific group of ungulates. This is an example of genetic diversity. The Yeti is closely related to things such as horses, cattle, and camels. There is more evidence that converges the Yeti and primates apart. The hair that they found in the Himalayas could have been hair from another animal like a horse but it very well could have been from the Yeti. The locals know it was from the Yeti. Do you? I would not doubt that it is from a creature unidentified by mankind. There are tons of things we have yet to find so who knows, the Yeti could be out there.
