Temperature Tolerance
Kelly et al. used the marine organism Tigriopus californicus to study the existence of local adaption that occurs in populations of the same species inhabiting various locations with a range in temperatures. The study found that local adaptation does indeed exist in this species. In the laboratory, even after ten generations, the northernmost population of T. californicus (from the western coast of the northern United States) was unable to adapt to the degree that would allow it to survive in the temperatures that the southernmost populations (from Baja California, Mexico) flourished in. This provides evidence that these different populations of the same species have adapted in a way that allows them to be best suited to the environment that they inhabit. The species as a whole cannot inhabit the full range of temperatures in the described thermal tolerance range because certain populations have lost variation that is unnecessary for survival in their habitat.
