Last Wednesday [edit: during our first class], we touched upon the origins of Godzilla and had our Odyssey’s first glimpse into the realm of monsters. Scaled with the grains of truth, Godzilla rises from the deep with a form like some creature of the Cretaceous. A plausible story of radioactivity incites the beast to appear, and Godzilla is born twice through the minds of humans.
One monster is formed as just that, a demon beyond human control. The other is the embodiment of humanity’s fear: nuclear experimentation and neglecting the planet could lead to devastation.
Speaking of nuclear work and the effects of radiation, the
National Geographic article regarding daisies around Fukushima is extremely interesting. Though it is more likely to be coincidence than radiation, the mutated daisies are a good example of how human fear can develop monsters from the most mundane of events (i.e. the flowers in one’s garden being misshapen).
When the entire world can be affected by the actions of humans, doesn’t any monster imaginable become “up for grabs”?
